Well in May, I started chemotherapy. My hair did not start to fall out until my second treatment, and now I have had my fourth and basically my hair went from being long and thick to short and very very thin. Just because I have not lost it all yet, should I just shave it off? Would it be better off that way?
Thanks to everyone who answers, this was not an easy question to ask, seeing as how I will be going into my sophmore year, and I really wish I just had hair!I'm Losing my hair because of Chemotherapy?
I'm so sorry about what you are going through. I know it is really hard, especially at your age. I am a nurse and I work on a cancer floor. Many patients ask me this same question. Of course it is up to you what to do about it, but most people opt to just shave it off when it starts to fall out a lot. I guess I see so many bald people that my opinion may be biased, but I think most women look so cute with their heads shaved. Many of them wear such cute hats and scarves. Mostly I think people look better with their heads shaved than when they have patchy areas all over.
Keep thinking positively. You will get through this and be stronger in the end because of it. Best of luck to you. No matter what you do, hold your head up high and be proud. You are obviously a very strong and special person and you should be proud of that.I'm Losing my hair because of Chemotherapy?
I know exactly how you feel, I just finished my 2nd round of chemo, and lost all my hair all over again. When I first began to lose it, I had my head shaved, it just seemed to be easier than losing it gobfuls at a time. That was horrible, it was very depressing. It's just now starting to grow back, I can't wait until it grows out, but I have to see a specialist 120 miles away to see if I have another type of cancer. So I'm not going to get to excited just yet. I had really long hair too. It's up to you though if you want to or not. It was just easier for me. See your social worker about wigs and hats, it will make you feel better, if you do decide to shave your hair. God bless, and I pray you beat cancer too.
In high school people can be immature and cruel. In this case they may not mean to be, or stare, but you have to think that they are just kids and they haven't develop the thing called maturity yet to be able to look the other way and not gawk. So the answer to your question would be no do not shave your head. This could be your opportunity to try out different styles and colors of wigs. Women that can change their hair style and color a couple times of the month are called DIVAS! I used to do it when I could afford to, but take my advice and diva it up, girl! When the haters start to talk, wear a t-shirt like Nick Cannon did that says STOP HATIN'! GO GIRL!
I'm sorry to hear you have to go through this, especially at such a young age. It's really a personal decision. I can tell you that I shaved my head when I was having chemotherapy last summer because I didn't want to wait until it started falling out by itself. Why don't you try some different style wigs on and see if you're comfortable wearing a wig. I wore bandanas, I had them in lots of different colors. I wish you the very best.
First let me say you are now in my prayers. My personal feeling is that you may want to just cut the remaining hair very short, not shave it off. Having shorter hair fall out may be easier to tolerate than long strands. The shorter cut may even make the thining hair appear a bit fuller. The other thought is after cutting it short, if you decide to shave it off it won't be such a drastic measure. You'll have a chance to transition yourself. Good Luck and God Bless.
If you shave it beforehand, it will look less patchy and no one will question whether or not you are ill. I also think it is easier than miserably watching handfuls fall out everyday. I am so sorry and I feel for you, dear, but be strong and don't lose faith:) Good luck. Chemo is nasty but in the long run it gets rid of that nasty cancer.
P.S. Your hair will grow back after chemo:)
It's up to you what to do about your hair, if you're getting tired of it falling out all the time, shave it of girl! It may be better off, It has to be frustrating coming out a little at a time..
Good luck with ur chemo and I hope you get better soon
My mom was going to shave her head, but she ended up not losing it all. But if you contact the cancer society, you can get a free wig. They have real hair wigs %26amp; synthetic hair wigs.
