Why am I losing my hair?

Every time i scratch my head i pull out 5-10 hairs and I don't understand why. I am 16 years old and i have fairly long hair. My comforter is filled with my hairs and it scares me. I don't have mono, is there any illness that can cause you to lose hair? Why am I losing my hair?
First off, are you sure your hair is falling out at the roots and not breaking off. A good haircut might help. Actually I would start with that. You don't have to cut it that much just a couple inches. Until you find out what's going on, I wouldn't color your hair or use anything else harsh. Pay close attention. If you hair is still falling out, after the cut then you should go to your doc.

The medical conditions that come to mind are:

Some sort of scalp condition (is your scalp clear?)

Stress (have you been under a lot of stress lately).

Hormones

Thyroid condition (if you do have thyroid issues this is easily remedied with meds).

Are you on any type of medication where hair loss would be the side effect?

But just keep an eye on things -- most likely it is something very simple. Why am I losing my hair?
There is a possibility that you have alopecia. It is something where you lose your hair quite rapidly. If it comes down to it you might need to buy a wig. You will slowly become bald or close to bald. If I were you I would go to the doctor and bring it up. Other than that I can not think of another thing that you might have.

I hope that you do not have alopecia. It really sucks if you have it. Good Luck
