My son is 5 months old and he is my fourth. This has never happened before. I did not breastfeed the other 3. My hair is falling out in clumps. Any ideas what I should do and is it normal?I am losing my hair while breastfeeding. Above my temples are 2 bald spots.?
Dont freak out! This is very normal...although it cant hurt to see your primary care physician just in case. My hair fell out at my temples, although I didnt notice until I went to get my hair cut. The lady cutting my hair pointed it out to me...and boy was I shocked! It looked totally wierd...but I had long hair and it sort of covered it up so I hadnt seen it earlier.

Dont worry...itll grow back. But if its still worrying you in a couple of months, see your doctor.I am losing my hair while breastfeeding. Above my temples are 2 bald spots.?
my friend had this happen about 3-4 months after baby, she freaked!! it was falling out in shower etc..eventually the clumps stopped...and her hair looks normal now, but to her, she said its never been as thick..her'es what i found out about WHY on babycenter.
Why am I losing my hair?
If your hair got thicker during your pregnancy, you may now start to shed it in handfuls. This happens to some new moms around one to four months after having their baby. Don't worry you won't go bald. Just as high estrogen levels caused you to lose less hair during pregnancy, decreasing estrogen levels postpartum may cause you to shed more. It's replaced by new hair, though, and the shedding tapers off, so your hair should be back to normal within a year. On the bright side, if you suffered from excess facial and body hair during pregnancy (the result of an increase in hormones called androgens), you can expect to lose that hair three to six months after having your baby.
It could well mean you are lacking in some important vitamins or minerals. Stress can also cause a loss of hair. A while back I went through a health crisis that was very stressful and I starting losing my hair. After it was resolved it stopped. However, because you are breastfeeding you are at risk of losing certain necessary nutrients, so, I would strongly advise you to go to your doctor and discuss this with him. Also, lets not forget the stress factor, with 3 children and an infant to care for stress is inevitable. Don't feel as though this means you are weak. Every mother feels stressed out, so go investigate and do what is best for you!
I wish you well, God bless
I'm going to be watching this question closely! You are not alone...I have the same problem... my son is 6 months old and I also breastfeed. I don't have bald spots but my hair used to be one length and now I have sideburns, and the back of my hair underneath is about 4-5 inches shorter than the rest. Also, when I wash my hair, I get clumps of hair that comes out.
Bald spots are definately not normal, but I use to loose my hair in clumps for months after my babies were born. It was a lot worse with my second daughter.
It sounds like you're lacking something or perhaps there is some other reason for your hair loss. I would definately go to your doctor to get it checked out!
Good luck!
In addition to the above suggestions, have your thyroid checked. Thyroid can go wonky after having a baby, especially after multiple pregnancies.
You may have very low iron. It's normal to lose a ton of hair in the first 6 months after having a baby, but when it causes bald spots there's probably more going on.
I would take prenatal vitamins and see the doctor. It sounds like you have a deficiency.
